Easy Dalmatian Room Makeover With Blinds And Shades
As kids grow up, parents inevitably redecorate the room. While this can get expensive if you are not sure how to transform a room on a shoestring budget, it really does not have to be. The key is knowing how to transform walls, beds, blinds and shades into a new look without buying a new bedroom set.
Here we will discuss how to transform a room into a Dalmatian theme.
Start with the Bed
The classic Dalmatian movie is, of course, 101 Dalmatians which works great for girls. Boys may want to go with a slightly more masculine firehouse and Dalmatian theme. In either case, you will want to paint the bed red.
This is why a good solid wood bed is so important for children. Nowadays, you can even buy the 3-in-1 beds for babies. It starts as a crib, and then it adjusts to a Toddler Bed, and finally into a twin bed. This will save you so much money in the long run since transforming the bed is as simple as a bit of sanding and painting.
If you have bunk beds, separate the two beds so there is a large space under the top bunk. A carefully measured piece of plywood can be attached underneath the bed that reaches the floor. You can then paint this to look like a "dog house" with your children's name above the door. To create the doggy door, just cut and sand an upside down U.
Move to the Blinds and Shades
If you go with the classic white blinds, then adding a sheer shade can change the blinds into just about anything. It is actually very easy to go to a fabric store and find a Dalmatian print. Simply get some stitch witchery and Dalmatian fabric to iron your way to a new window treatment.
If you went with wood blinds and you are a bit of an artist (or can at least trace a pattern), then a light sanding along with some spray paint will make Dalmatian print windows. If that seems a bit much, then spray paint them red for either a firehouse look or a 101 Dalmatians theme.
Changing the Walls
For this room, you will definitely want white walls. Red would be just too much and is hard to paint over. (When you go to paint over the bed and blinds, you will need to buy a can of Killz. Use it as an undercoat for new paint.)
Depending on your art ability, you can either print up or buy Dalmatian pictures for framed artwork, or you can color or paint your own. In either case, a nice red frame will make the Dalmatian pop.
Other accessories to include are a Dalmatian bedspread, lamp cover and rug. For girls a few Dalmatian stuffed animals work but boys will need both Dalmatians and fire trucks to complete the theme.
With just a little imagination, you can transform any room on a shoestring budget.

Why Didn't The U.S. Do It Sooner?
The new U.S. passports are ePassports. They contain a tiny chip that stores biometric information. Biometrics is measurements of individual physical and behavioral characteristics. Facial recognition is the global standard for travel identification. It depends on bone structure – like the size of eye sockets or distance between the eyes. These relationships don’t change if a person gains weight, grows a beard or has surgery. The biometric information stored on the chip is compared with the real human face. ePassports aren’t 100% secure, but at least the U.S. will be as secure as the other 70 or more countries already using them.
Fish caught near U.S. wastewater treatment plants in Chicago, Dallas, Philadelphia, Phoenix and Orlando contained pharmaceutical residues. Results from this first nationwide study prompted the Environmental Protection Agency to expand its research to more than 150 locations. Even extremely diluted residues can harm aquatic species because of their constant exposure to the contaminated water. Traces of at east 7 drugs and 2 soap scent chemicals were found in fish in all 5 locations. Now the EPA is calling for additional studies on the effects of contaminated drinking water on humans. Sometimes it’s hard to remember that the “P” in EPA stands for Protection.
A U.S. ban on drop-side cribs has been proposed and approved by most major crib manufacturers. It was proposed because of infant deaths and injuries and the fact that more than 3 million drop-side cribs were recalled in 2007 and 2008. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says at least 3 children have died in accidents involving these cribs in the past 18 months and there have been more than 2 dozen incidents in which the drop-sides detached from the cribs. No matter what side you see this problem from, the ban will make all crib sides immovable.
All zoos in the U.S. now have some kind of “animal enrichment” program – some are even mandated by the federal government. Games and other activities are essential to keeping animals healthy outside their natural environments. Gorillas having to search for their food, tigers jumping through old tires, bears clawing at a beer keg treated with deer scent, monkeys tearing up streamers, leopards pawing at boxes containing meatballs – these programs help prevent the animals from becoming overweight and from developing behavioral problems because of being physically and mentally idle. Enrichment programs might be a good idea for human animals too.
