How do you add an electrical outlet to a doghouse outside?
With the weather getting colder I want to put an electrical outlet in my doghouse so I can put a heat lamp up for him can someone please explain how to do this in LAYMAN'S TERMS the dog house is probably 30 feet away.
dog might chew on the power cord . best advice is to cut off the end of a good drop cord . run it through a watter hose . bury it just under the grass no need to go deeper unless the dog likes to dig . but even so it will take him or her longer to chew through the hose than the cord . now mount the power box and run the wire through it and attach the end to the outlet . and your good to go .
good point on the light . it doesnt have to be a light . they have a bulb that puts out heat with no light . will find it best in a pet store . it is used for snakes and other cold blooded animals .

Can You Use a Gfi in an Underground Outlet?
You can use a GFI in an underground outlet, but you need to have a point of access to the receptacle. These outlets are designed to be used outside and near areas that will get wet. An underground electrical outlet is rarely used in homes today. Most GFI needs are above ground so they are easily accessible for troubleshooting or testing. For sump pumps in homes, the GFI outlet is near the pump, but is accessible by the homeowner to test the outlet, which is recommended once a month. The ground fault interrupters are approved for outdoors and in basements that run sump pumps.
If you need a receptacle outside for landscape lighting or ponds, a GFI receptacle is needed. The building code requires this type of electrical outlet. You can place the outlet close to the ground to hide it from view. An underground outlet can cause problems if it is not easily accessible. Septic tanks will use an underground GFI outlet. These outlets are protected and there is access to the receptacles in case there is problem. Having an experienced electrician install the receptacles the proper way is the best and usually required by law. Since the electrical outlet will be underground, professional installation is recommended.
If you need an underground outlet, you need to use GFI outlet. This is the only outlet approved for outdoor and underground use. If you use anything different, you will be in violation of the housing code. The outlets you use in a home are not meant for outdoor use, they are not UL approved for the elements. If you need to have an underground outlet installed, call a professional and licensed electrician who will do the wiring and installation the proper way so it meets the requirements of the building and housing authority and will pass inspection.
